KIDS @UNCRD

Points of Talk

1.UNCRD does some efforts for disaster management from the perspective of education,
both through software and hardware approach. What we talked more in the discussion was the software,
means the approach to the society. The on going projects are in Fiji Islands, Indonesia, India, and Uzbekistan.
They focused on:
a. Demonstration retrofitting of school buildings
b. Capacity building of communities to cope with disasters
c. Education, awareness raising
d. Dissemination of culture of safe schools and safe communities (through knowledge and experience)

2.In Indonesia, they are doing disaster education activities by emphasizing an approach to formal education,
to reduce vulnerability of school children.
They are going to integrate disaster risk reduction knowledge at the school’s curriculum.
It will be applied to all levels from elementary to high school students.
Recently, they cooperate with the Ministry of Education in Indonesia,
with the experts in all subjects available at school (e.g. experts of math, experts of geography, etc),
to evaluate the past and current condition of curriculum, subjects, teacher and students in Indonesia,
to do mapping of all grades according to the level and basic competency, and later they will plan a new curriculum,
where disaster reduction knowledge integrated in each subjects.

3.Beyond the formal education, they also do some informal activities,
such as holding a competition between schools related to disaster risk reduction activities,
training on how to volunteer, etc.

What they suggests us to do for our preparation before going to Indonesia:
1. Learn about the local culture, especially at schools in Indonesia
2. Read the book about extracurricular activities in Indonesian school, related to disaster risk reduction activities.
3. They have some materials related to the former points. We can ask for that and they will send.

UNCRD (United Nation Centre of Regional Development)

UNCRD has several projects such as participatory workshops, data collection, consultation, etc.
Right now, UNCRD has initiated the new project, entitled "Housing Earthquake Safety Initiative (HESI).
There are 4 target countries included in this project: Indonesia, Fiji, Peru and Nepal.

Currently in Indonesia, UNCRD is trying to integrate the disaster education program with school curriculum.
The purpose of this activity is to raise disaster knowledge competency,
and hopefully the children will be more conscious of it. Once done,
these children will be expected to have a proper natural response in the event of a disaster.

The method of this program is to put information about disaster into the school curriculum through several phases.
For example, in elementary school children learn about the basics of disaster.
In intermediate level, they learn about the principles of a disaster.
Then, junior high school children learn about basic safety knowledge.

Other programs are also being conducted by UNCRD, such as teacher and student training.
There are also some student competitions through extracurricular activities about disaster education,
with the purpose of gaining knowledge through 'learning by doing' method.
In this case, they will be forced to fix some problems through emergencies response.

UNCRD always tries to gain all of the information and support from every single aspect to help improve the disaster education system.
All help, suggestion, and volunteer programs are welcome.
